Celebrating Diversity and Creativity: Allison Parkinson's Journey in Lewisham

Lewisham has been a nurturing ground for many creative minds, and Allison Parkinson is no exception. Having called this vibrant borough home for nearly three decades, Allison's journey as a writer and children's author is deeply intertwined with the community's spirit. Living in Catford with her husband and two daughters, she cherishes the area's diversity and sense of togetherness. Her connection to the community is further strengthened by her role as a governor at Sandhurst Primary School, where her daughters attended. This deep-rooted bond with Lewisham is beautifully reflected in her children's books, where local icons like the Catford Cat make charming appearances.

Allison's most popular creation, the Laurella Swift historical fantasy series, holds a special place in her heart. Inspired by her daughters' experiences, Laurella is a ten-year-old Catford schoolgirl embarking on time-traveling adventures. The series was born out of a desire to see more mixed-race protagonists in children's literature, offering young readers a relatable and inspiring character. Laurella's escapades are not just entertaining but educational, bringing history to life in a way that captivates and engages.

Ensuring the quality and sustainability of her products is paramount for Allison. Her commitment to environmental responsibility is evident in her choice of trusted suppliers and the use of a 'print on demand' model, minimizing waste and emissions. Her ROAR! card game, produced in the UK from FSC-certified materials, further underscores her dedication to sustainability.

Like many small business owners, Allison has faced challenges, particularly in maintaining self-belief. However, the encouragement from young readers and the supportive local business community have been instrumental in overcoming these hurdles. The creative network in Lewisham, along with the support from the council and surrounding boroughs, has provided invaluable resources through training, mentoring, and networking.

Looking ahead, Allison is excited about several upcoming projects, including three new books she is currently working on. Her passion for storytelling extends beyond writing, as she plans to launch story crafting workshops in schools, libraries, and children's clubs. These workshops aim to inspire young minds to see themselves at the heart of their own adventures, using everyday items to spark creativity.

Allison Parkinson's journey is a testament to the power of community, creativity, and diversity. Her work not only entertains but also empowers, offering children a chance to see themselves in stories and encouraging them to dream big.
