A Journey Back to Lewisham: Inspiration and Community Influence
Starting a business is often a deeply personal journey, and for me, launching in Lewisham was no exception. Growing up in this vibrant borough, I spent my formative years surrounded by its rich tapestry of people, cultures, and history. After nearly a decade in Manchester, returning to Lewisham feels like coming full circle. This community has equipped me with invaluable skills that have been instrumental in both starting and sustaining my business. More than just a location, Lewisham represents an opportunity to give back and show appreciation for the support that has been a cornerstone of my journey.
Our most popular products are a tie between the amber and vanilla and the coconut and lemongrass scented candles. My strong sense of smell has always been a defining trait, often teased by friends for my "hound dog" nose. This unique ability to detect subtle notes in fragrances inspired me to create candles that offer an experience beyond the ordinary. The amber and vanilla scent transports you to an exotic oud market, while the coconut and lemongrass evokes the essence of tropical holidays. Commitment to Quality and Sustainability
Ensuring the quality of our products starts with sourcing high-quality raw materials. Our candles are crafted from paraben-free, vegan soy wax, supporting a smokeless burn. Unlike paraffin and beeswax, our plant-based wax reduces smoke and soot. We follow strict process guidelines to guarantee consistency in every handmade candle. Our commitment to sustainability extends to our packaging, primarily made from recycled cardboard, and our use of aroma-grade therapy oils for fragrances like peppermint and eucalyptus. Additionally, our crochet bag products are made from recycled t-shirt yarn. We also offer a discount scheme for customers who return candle containers for reuse.
Overcoming Challenges as a Small Business
Running a small business comes with its share of challenges, from securing funding to juggling multiple roles. To navigate these hurdles, I've optimised processes for sustainability and leveraged resources within the borough, such as free workshops and networking opportunities at pop-up markets. Building a strong network and utilising council-provided resources like BICP have been pivotal in overcoming these challenges.
Exciting Plans and Collaborations Ahead
Looking to the future, I am thrilled to collaborate with students from the London College of Contemporary Arts (LCCA) over the next year. These talented students will develop a fully functional website for my business, enhancing our online presence while providing them with real-world experience. Our commitment to sustainability and collaboration makes this an exciting opportunity to give back. Additionally, we plan to expand our candle-making workshops across the borough, welcoming groups and organisations interested in customised sessions. Our recent workshop at Hatcham House received incredible feedback.
